Vishnu is one of the three major gods of India, the other two being Shiva and Brahma. Vishnu is said to represent the maintaining or sustaining force in the universe and is thus commonly known as "the preserver."

Devotees of Vishnu (Vaishnavis or Vaishnavites) believe that he incarnates periodically to increase righteousness, protect good and destroy evil. Thus Vishnu is strongly identified with his avatars, especially Krishna and Rama.
