A bhikkhu (male) or bhikkhuni (female) is a fully ordained Buddhist monk. A bhikkhu lives by receiving donations of food and necessities from others. Many Buddhists believe that merit is gained by the offerings of sustenance to bhikkhus. In this way a bhikkhu is supported by their community.
